Though Tiong Bahru has been one of the most popular places for cafehopping, The Dispensary seems to be sitting aloofly at the far end of the cafe area. Its old school retro interior is a strong draw, and its peaceful and slow-paced environment is especially attractive. The menu here is a simple fare, serving just coffee, desserts and some simple sandwiches which are great for a light bite.
LOOK & FEEL
The old facet of the shophouse remains visible – the cement floor, rough walls and old school air vents. Simple looking furniture are used to accentuate the modesty of the place.
An abundance of natural light pours into the cafe, and I love the feel of it. There are also outdoor seating if you fancy some fresh air on cooler days.
FOOD & DRINKS
I was surprised to receive my Latte in a traditional kopitiam glass, but why was I surprised? The Dispensary was outrightly a retro themed cafe, so the latte should come in such a glass, isn’t it? The thick layer of foam spelled bad news, but after the foam was slurped up, the coffee was rather decent. However, I thought that this wasn’t one of the best coffee I have came across, since I don’t usually fancy the bitter, dryer type of coffee.
I fell at the hands of Nutella Cupcake. I did expect a lot in this petite-sized cake, because I LOVE Nutella. Sad to say, the hazelnut taste wasn’t strong enough, but at least the texture was pretty nice. We finished this quickly, partly ‘cuz of the size, and partly ‘cuz it’s so easy to devour it!
The Red Velvet Cake was the better performer, and I liked how it wasn’t too sweet, sticky or dry. The ratio of the cheese cream and the cake was just right, hence a balanced taste was achieved.
IN A NUTSHELL
I give it up to The Dispensary for putting elements of decades ago together in such a charming shophouse. The beautiful preserved exterior of an old dispensary and its quaint interior made it such a pleasant time spent. The quiet and peaceful ambience also makes a conducive environment for studying and working away from office (yes, wifi and power point!). Though the selection of food is pretty limited and its coffee isn’t the best, I very much want to find a reason to hang out at The Dispensary again!
