Rooster Cafe

Taiwan / Taipei

The neighbourhood just outside of Shuanglian Metro station is filled with quaint cafes and indie clothing stores. Walking down Nanjing West Road from the exit of the metro station, you would spot Rooster Cafe in no time.

Interior & Ambience

Rooster Cafe serves sandwiches and brunch, and is a nice chill place to hang out. The space is rather small but very cosy and pleasant looking.

Food & Drinks

We ordered the usual suspects, the breakfast platter  (which they call 男子汉的早餐 cutely) and the foccacia platter . Both of them came with salad and pumpkin mash.

Strictly speaking, the food here was mediocre. The foccacia toast was simply too tough and the eggs were barely warm. There was nothing to rave about, even the coffee did not meet expectations.

After hopping to a few cafes, we concluded that the "latte" in Taiwan is not like the usual ones we get in Singapore which tend to be more concentrated, so try your luck with the cappuccino as it is less milky.

In Short

So should you check this out? Yes, if you are in the area, and the cafe makes a good photograph.

Also check out Miss V Bakery just steps away from it if you are there.

Miss V Bakery

Taiwan / Taipei

Miss V Bakery hides itself on the quiet street of Shuanglian area, but it is no less outstanding than the other bakeries out there. Before the shop opened for the day, we spotted a savvy local crowd waiting at its door.

Interior & Ambience

The interior is sweet and pleasant, making guests feel like they have stepped into a European patisserie.  At the same time, the decor is very simple, showing its down to earth and earnest character.

Food

We tried the Key Lime Pie which was really tasty with a crispy crust and delicious sweet-sour combination. We could do with lesser of the lime cream but it was satisfying as it is.

All the other cakes and bakes on display were as alluring, and if we had a bit more tummy space we would have ordered at least three to try.

It serves a promising brunch menu too - everyone there had a breakfast plate at their tables. Will definitely return to try their brunch and the other cakes the next time!

The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen

Malaysia / Johor Bahru

image.jpg

It has become an addiction to visit Johor Bahru once every few months ever since the causeway Neighbourhood has become such a hipster hang out. Just three months from the last visit where we checked out FOC, plenty of new cafes and ice cream shops have opened its door to compete for the favours of the cafehopping crowd.

There are many worth checking out, but there's one that forever remains my favourite because of its super yummy food, and that is The Replacement Lodge and Kitchen.

Interior & Ambience

Firstly, it has a really nice interior that is pleasant to the eyes - white walls, marble tiles, wooden surfaces and potted plants, everything that makes a perfect background for a photograph.

Secondly, the service team is always friendly and willing to help, which makes the experience even better.

Food & Drinks

More than that, the food and coffee are fabulous.

We will never leave this place without gobbling down the Breakfast Platter. I mean, every single element of this platter was just so delicious! The sausage, the toast, the eggs, I have to stop here. And psst it costs 28 bucks.... in ringgit.

Another dish that always left me in awe each time would be the B&B French Toast. Seriously, it is very rare to find food delicious to the extent that it gives an overwhelming sense of happiness, but this is one of them. I don't know how they do it, but the French toast was just so crispy with every bite it crackled, and I wouldn't feel "gelat" finishing the entire dish on my own despite it being fried. The ice cream that went with it is just perfect, and another very important element would be the caramelised banana, sweet and fresh. This will definitely please all sweet toothed patrons.

The coffee is also beyond my expectations. I get a little wary tasting coffee in other countries but The Replacement proved me so wrong. Their blend was really balanced and full bodied with a nice kick. I can't help but get a Piccolo every time I visit.

In Short

The Replacement has got to be one of the best cafes in JB, and I would recommend to make this a stop every time you drop by JB causeway. It's within walking distance from the CitySquare mall so there's no excuses not to go ;)
